He held no lands or tenements of the king in chief or any other in demesne as of fee, but he did hold the following manor, lands and tenements for life, with reversion to Reynold West, knight , William Vuedale, esquire , Richard Wyntworth , and Roger Kays, clerk, and their heirs. He held the manor etc. by virtue of a fine levied at Westminster on the octave of Trinity 1438 [CP 25/1/13/83, no. 23] before John Juyn and his associates, king’s justices, between Reynold West, knight, William Vuedale, esquire, Richard Wyntworth , and Roger Kays, clerk, querents, and John Champe , described as John Champe, esquire , and John Chelre, deforciants. John Champe and John Chelre recognised the manor etc. to be the right of Reynold, William, Richard, and Roger, as held by grant of John and John. For that recognition, Reynold etc. [as above] granted the manor etc. to John Champe, to hold for life, without impeachment of waste, of the king and his heirs, with reversion to Reynold etc. [as above] and their heirs. Royal licence was previously obtained and shown to the jurors [CPR 1436–41, p. 119]. Also shown to the jurors was the other part of the fine. Speen, the manor, annual value 5 marks, held of the king as 1/30 knight’s fee, and a messuage, mill, 20 a. land, 15 a. meadow, and 3 a. wood, annual value 33s. 4d., held of the king as 1/50 knight’s fee.
He died on 14 February 1440 without heir. [Head:] Delivered to court on 10 November.
