He held the following in demesne as of fee. Compton Dundon, 2 messuages, one cottage, one toft, 20 a. land, and 4 a. meadow, annual value 16s. 8d., held of John, bishop of Bath and Wells , and other feoffees of the manor, service unknown. After his death, they descended to a certain John Cauxe, still living, his kin and heir as son of John son of Walter. John son of John entered the messuages etc. and is yet so seised. He has occupied them and taken the issues since Walter’s death. A certain Robert Browne, chaplain, was formerly seised in demesne as of fee of the following. He demised them to Walter for life, with successive remainders to John son of Walter and the heirs male of his body; and to the right heirs of Robert. Walter was thus seised in demesne as of free tenement. John son of Walter died during Walter’s life. Walter continued in his estate for life, and died so seised, with remainder to John son of John as son and heir male of the body of John son of Walter. Hardington Mandeville, 6 messuages, a dovecot, 200 a. land, and 20 a. meadow, annual value 40s., held of William Waddam, esquire, service unknown. Knighton in the parish of Stogursey, a messuage, 40 a. land, and 8 a. meadow, annual value 20s., held of Robert Ponynges, knight , service unknown. Cannington, a messuage and 40 a. land, called ‘Somners’, held of Alexander Hody, service unknown, and a toft and 40 a. land, called ‘Velee’, held of others than the king, but of whom is unknown. Annual value 18s.
He died on 12 October 1424. John son of John is his kin and next heir, as son of John son of Walter, and is aged 22 and more.
A certain Henry Cauxe occupied the messuages etc. in Hardington Mandeville, Knighton, and Cannington from the time of Walter’s death until the day of this inquisition, and took the issues, title and manner unknown. [Head:] Delivered to court on 1 May 1441.
