The king is given to understand that <name type="person">Walter</name>, son, was lately seised in demesne as of fee of 5 messuages in the parish of <name type="parish">St Stephen Walbrook</name>, held of <rs type="person">the king</rs> in <rs type="serviceTenure" subtype="bur">free burgage</rs> and, thus seised, in contravention of the statute of mortmain, alienated them without royal licence to <name type="person">Walter</name>, son, not then freeman of the city. Inquire which Walter, son, was seised of the messuages in demesne as of fee and then alienated them, whether or not he was a freeman on the day of the alienation, to whom he alienated the messuages, by what authority, of whom they are held, by what service, and their value.</ab>

                        Thus seised, by his testament containing his last will, proved, proclaimed and enrolled in the <name type="place" key="1650499">London</name> Husting court of common pleas on <date when="1382-07-28" type="grant">28 July 1382</date>, <name type="person" role="grantor">he</name> bequeathed the messuages, among other things, in mortmain to the then <name type="person" role="grantee">master of the house or hospital of St Thomas of Acre, London</name>, his confreres, and their successors, <rs type="licObt" subtype="no">without royal licence</rs>, against the statute.</grant> <seg type="occupiers">He afterwards died and a certain <name type="person">
