By letters patent dated at Carmarthen on 26 September 1403 [CPR 1401–1405, p. 295], shown to the jurors, ‪ Henry IV granted the following – lands and tenements that were of William Gwyn ap Ieuan within the lordship of Kidwelly, 2 messuages with 3 a. land that were of Rees ap Griffith ap Llewelyn within the lordship of Carmarthen, and a messuage that was of Iorwerth Bola, all forfeit to the king by reason of the rebellion of William, Rees, and Iorwerth – to Thomas and his heirs to the value of 13 marks yearly, provided always that he is answerable to the king for any surplus, as contained in the letters. The grant was made because the king’s beloved liege, Thomas Dyer, burgess of his vill of Carmarthen, had been despoiled of goods and chattels to the value of £1000 by Welsh rebels. He was thus seised in demesne as of fee of the following, and died so seised. Kidwelly, within the lordship: 200 a. arable, each acre worth 2d. yearly; 100 a. pasture, each acre worth 1d. yearly; 4 a. meadow, each acre worth 4d. yearly; and a drain by Godreth on the Tywi, worth 12d. yearly, described as all those lands and tenements that were of William Gwyn ap Ieuan at the time of the forfeiture. They are held of the king as of his crown by service of one red rose at Midsummer, if requested, for all services and customs. Carmarthen, within the lordship: 2 messuages and 3 a. land, worth 2s. yearly, that were of Rees ap Griffith at the time of the forfeiture. They are held of the king as of his crown by service of 2s. yearly, payable at Easter and Michaelmas equally for all services. Carmarthen, within the vill: the messuage, worth 12d. yearly, that was of Iorwerth Bola at the time of the forfeiture. It is held of the king by service of 6d. yearly, payable at Easter and Michaelmas equally for all services.
He died on 20 September 1409. Marion, wife of Thomas Phelip , is his sister and next heir, and aged 60 and more.
Thomas Phelip occupied the lands and tenements from the time of Thomas’ death, and yet occupies them. He took, and yet takes, the issues. [Head:] Delivered to court on 9 November.
