He held the following in demesne as of fee. Edlesborough, 40 a. arable, each acre worth 4d. yearly, and 2 a. wood, parcel of Waleraund’s fee, held of the king in chief as 1/60 knight’s fee. The 2 a. wood is of no annual value because it is seasonable wood, cut every 8th year, and it has been cut within the last 3 years. When cut, each acre is worth 3s. 4d. Long before his death, by deed dated on 20 July 1433, shown to the jurors, he granted the following lands, tenements, and rent, to William Fynderne, esquire, John Enderby, esquire , Thomas Rokys, esquire , John Sewell of Ledburn, Hugh Byllyngdon , Thomas Rempston , and Richard Wylico , and their heirs and assigns. Thus seised, by deed dated on 4 August 1433, shown to the jurors, they granted the lands etc. to Thomas Rufford and Joan his wife, still living, and the heirs of Thomas Rufford. Thomas was thus seised in demesne as of fee, and Joan as of free tenement. Royal licence was obtained and shown to the jurors [CPR 1429–36, p. 284]. Edlesborough, a messuage, worth 3s. 4d. yearly, 60 a. arable, each acre worth 4d. yearly, 10 a. meadow, each acre worth 16d. yearly, 8 a. pasture, each acre worth 12d. yearly, 8 a. wood, and 60s. rent, called Eastbury, held of the king in chief as 1/8 knight’s fee. The 8 a. wood is of no annual value because it is seasonable wood, cut every 8th year, and it has been cut within the last 2 years. When cut, each acre is worth 3s. 4d.
He died on 20 September last. Robert Rufford , his son and next heir, is aged 17 and more. [Head:] Delivered to court on 24 November 1439.
This sentence is not in E 149. E 149: ‘shown to the jurors’ is followed by the deleted ‘[f]urthermore, Thomas and Joan had issue: Robert’. The E 149 ms is not a fair copy of C 139: it includes multiple interlineations and deletions. The sum of the information is, however, largely the same as that given in C 139. Deviations are here noted. E 149: ‘[h]e died on 29 September last’.
