The church of North Molton is extended at 20 marks yearly, and the church of Black Torrington is extended at £10 yearly. William Cheyne and Margaret his wife hold the rest of the manor and advowsons by virtue of Margaret’s dower, endowed by John Saymore , her late husband, father of John who is named in the writ. He held no other nor more lands or tenements in demesne or service of the king in chief, or any other but, by his charter, shown to the jurors, he granted custody of 2 parts of the park, and the beasts in the same 2 parts, to Thomas Chedder, esquire , for life, taking yearly from John and his heirs a gown of Kendal and sufficient pasture for one horse in the 2 parts of the park.

John, named in the writ, and Elizabeth his wife had issue: Thomas, still living. John died on 25 September last. Thomas Saymore , his son and next heir, is aged 11 years and more.

Thus seised, he granted it by indented charter, dated on 23 July 1425 and shown to the jurors, to John, named in the writ, and Elizabeth, wife of John and daughter of Thomas, and to the heirs of their bodies, with reversion to Thomas Brook and his full heirs. John was described in the charter as John Saymore (de Sancto Mauro), son and heir of John Saymore (de Sancto Mauro). John and Elizabeth were thus seised of the manor in demesne as of fee tail, and they had issue: Thomas, Joan, Isabel, and Margaret, still living. John died seised of his estate and Elizabeth survived him. She is still living and continues in her estate by virtue of the grant. He granted the following by charter, shown to the jurors, to John Battescombe and Thomas Louell , and to their heirs and assigns. Rode, 9 messuages, each worth 6s. 8d. yearly; 6 cottages, each worth 3s. 4d. yearly; 180 a. arable, each acre worth 2d. yearly; 30 a. meadow, each acre worth 8d. yearly; 40 a. pasture, each acre worth 1d. yearly; 3 1/2 a. and a rood of wood, each acre worth 6d. yearly; 40 a. waste, each acre worth nothing yearly; a watermill, worth 5s. yearly; and 47s. assize rent, payable by free tenants at Christmas, Easter, Midsummer, and Michaelmas, equally, held of Walter Rodeney , service unknown. The lands and tenements were described as all the lands, tenements, rents, reversions, and services that he had in the vill and lordship of Rode, which lands, tenements, rents, reversions, and services were lately arbitrated and judged to John, by virtue of a fine levied at Westminster on the morrow of All Souls’ Day 1318 [CP 25/1/286/31, no. 173], before William Bereford and his associates, justices of the Bench, and others present.
