He was lately seised of the manor and lordship of Sutton Valence with Elizabeth his wife, formerly the wife of Reynold Cobham, knight , in demesne as of fee. By a fine levied in the court of the Common Bench on the octave of Hilary 1433 [CP 25/1/115/307, no. 335], William and Elizabeth recognised the manor, except an acre of land called ‘Chartcherchescroft’, to be the right of the venerable John, archbishop of York , Thomas Chaucer , Lewis John , John Hampden of Great Hampden, Thomas Rokes , Thomas Ramsey , and John Pyrye , as that held by grant of William and Elizabeth, and they quitclaimed the manor for them and the heirs of Elizabeth to the archbishop etc. [as above], and to their heirs and assigns. The archbishop etc. [as above] were thus seised in demesne as of fee. The fine was levied by virtue of royal letters patent [CPR 1429–36, p. 247], shown to the jurors; and William thus died jointly seised with Elizabeth of the acre of land. Elizabeth yet survives. Sutton Valence, an acre of land called ‘Chartcherchescroft’ in the manor, true annual value 20d., held of the king in chief, quantity of service unknown.
He died on 6 March last. Alexander Clyfford , his kin and next heir as the son of Lewis son of William, was aged 8 years and more on 30 November last.
