He did not hold lands or tenements of the king in chief or in service. But he was seised of the following manors, etc., in demesne as of fee, which, by a fine levied on the morrow of All Souls 1435 [CP 25/1/292/68, no. 175] between John Speke , John Braas, clerk , and John Pree, querents , and himself, he recognised to belong by right to John Speke , among other things that John Speke , John Braas and John Pree had by his grant, 2 a. land in the manor of Ilfracombe excepted. By this recognition they conceded the manors, etc., to him and the heirs of his body, remainder wholly to William Bonevyle, knight , and his heirs, as fully apparent from the part of the fine shown to the jurors. Afterwards John Herle died seised in this way without an heir of his body and, by virtue of the fine, the remainder belongs to William Bonevyle and his heirs. Hyde (Heede), the manor, true annual value 106s. 8d., held of others than the king, service unknown. ?'Pole' , the manor, true annual value 53s. 4d., held of others than the king, service unknown. Henry de Campo Arnulphi was seised of the 2 a. excepted in the fine in demesne as of fee and he had issue, William and Joan. Henry died thus seised and after his death the said 2 a. descended to William, his son and heir. William had issue, Katherine and Elizabeth, and he died thus seised. After William’s death the said 2 a. descended to Katherine and Elizabeth as his daughters and heirs. Katherine afterwards died without an heir of her body and her moiety descended to Elizabeth as her sister and heir. Elizabeth had issue, Margaret, and died thus seised. After Elizabeth’s death the said 2 a. descended to Margaret as her daughter and heir. She had issue, the said John Herle , and died thus seised. After her death the said 2 a. descended to John as Margaret’s son and heir, and he died thus seised. After John’s death the said 2 a. descended to William Bonevyle as his kin and heir, viz., son of John, son of William, son of Joan, sister of William, father of Katherine, and Elizabeth, the mother of Margaret, mother of John Herle . Ilfracombe, 2 a. land in the manor, annual value 4s. John Herle, knight, was formerly seised of the following manor in demesne as of fee, which he gave to William Bonevyle , John Speke , John Braas, clerk , and John Pree and their heirs. By virtue of this grant they were seised in demesne as of fee, and they gave it to John Herle and Isabel his wife and their heirs, reversion to themselves. John died without issue and Isabel is still living. Clyst Champernon, also known as Clyst St George, the manor, annual value £10, held of others than the king, service unknown.

Henry de Bodrugan, knight , was lately seised of the following in demesne as of fee, which he gave to Henry de Campo Arnulphi and Joan, Henry’s daughter, in free marriage, to them and the heirs of their bodies, by virtue of which they were seised in demesne as of fee tail. Hendersick and Merrifield, 4 messuages and 2 Cornish a. land, with homage and services of the following: the lord of Portlooe for the site of a mill in Hendersick, and Thomas de Tallan for 1/2 a. land in Penhallis, and Lawrence de Meyndy for 3 ferlings of land in Treryse Wona (Treworwona), true annual value 53s. 4d., held of others than the king, service unknown. William de Bodrugan , sometime archdeacon of Cornwall , was lately seised of the following in demesne as of fee, which he gave to Henry de Campo Arnulphi and Joan, daughter of Henry de Bodrugan, knight , his nephew, in free marriage, to them and the heirs of their bodies, by virtue of which they were seised in demesne as of fee tail. Tredrym, 5 ferlings and 1/2 a Cornish a. land, true annual value 20s., held of others than the king, service unknown. By a fine levied in the king’s court on the morrow of the Ascension 1324 [CP 25/1/32/18, no. 14], between Henry de Campo Arnulphi and Joan his wife, querents, and Hugh de Campo Arnulphi , deforciant, Henry recognised the following manor to belong by right to Hugh, as that which he had by grant of Henry, which Hugh gave to Henry and Joan and the heirs of their bodies to hold from the king by due service. This fully appears in ‪ Edward II ’s licence for this concord, given by letters patent [CPR 1321–24, p. 362], and confirmed by letters patent of ‪ Richard II , shown to the jurors. By virtue of this fine Henry and Joan were seised of the manor in demesne as of fee tail. Tywardreath, the manor, true annual value £50, held of the king in chief by knight service. Henry de Campo Arnulphi and Joan his wife had issue, William and Joan, and they died seised of the above manor of Tywardreath, along with the lands and tenements, etc., in Hendersick, Merrifield and Tredrym, by form of the grants. After their deaths the manor and lands, etc., descended to William as their son and heir. William had issue, Katherine and Elizabeth, to whom the manor and land, etc., descended as his daughters and heirs, by form of the grants. Afterwards, Katherine died without an heir of her body and her moiety descended to Elizabeth as her sister and heir. Elizabeth had issue, Margaret, and afterwards died seised in demesne as of fee tail, by form of the grants. The manor and lands, etc., descended to Margaret as daughter and heir of Elizabeth. Margaret afterwards had issue, namely John Herle, knight, named in the commission. Margaret died seised in demesne as of fee tail, by form of the grants, and after her death, the manor and lands, etc., descended to John Herle as her son and heir in demesne as of fee tail, by form of the grants, and he died thus seised of the lands, etc., without an heir of his body. After his death, the lands, etc., descended, by form of the aforesaid grants, to William Bonevyle, knight , still living, as kin and heir of John Herle , viz., son of John, son of William, son of Joan, sister of William, the father of Katherine and Elizabeth, mother of Margaret, mother of John Herle . Long before his death and without the king’s licence, John Herle gave the manor of Tywardreath to Thomas Beaumond , John Jaybyan , Thomas Cokayn and James Dyrell, parson of Marhamchurch , still living, and William Thorlewal , now deceased, for their lifetimes and they were thus seised as of free tenement. Afterwards, William died and the others continued to be seised by right of tenants in survivorship for the whole of John Herle ’s life. Afterwards John Herle died seised of the reversion of the manor, and after his death the reversion descended to William Bonevyle, knight , as heir of John Herle , in the way specified above by virtue of the said fine. By a fine levied on the morrow of All Souls 1435 between John Speke, esquire , John Braas, clerk and John Pree, querents , and John Herle, knight [CP 25/1/292/68, no. 175], John Herle recognised that the following manor and land, etc., belonged by right to John Speke , among other things that John Speke , John Braas and John Pree had by his grant. By this recognition, they conceded these things to him and the heirs of his body, remainder wholly to William Bonevyle, knight and his heirs, as fully appears in the part of the fine shown to the jurors. John Herle afterwards died seised without an heir of his body and the manor and land, etc., remained to William Bonevyle and his heirs, by virtue of the fine Trelawne, the manor, true annual value £20, held of John Cornwall, knight , of his castle of Trematon, service unknown. Marhamchurch and Jacobstow, 6 a. land and the advowsons of the churches, held of others than the king, service unknown.
