Jurors: John Norton ; Lawrence Hill ; John Seriaunt ; William Asselyn ; Thomas Clerk ; William Inman ; Thomas Andrewe ; John Chetell ; William Malster ; Richard Gonne ; William Godryk ; and John Shelford .

He held the following by curtesy after the death of Katherine his wife from the inheritance of Gervase de Clifton, knight , son and heir of Katherine, aged 40 years and more. Claypole, the manors called ‘Crescy Hall’ and ‘Doun Hall’, no part of which held of the king , but rather of John, Lord Beaumont and others, service unknown. There is a manorial site and 30 messuages, worth nothing yearly; 50 bovates of land and pasture, each worth 6s. 8d. yearly; and £7 rent, payable at Christmas, Easter, Midsummer and Michaelmas equally. A moiety of the advowson of the church, belonging to the manor called ‘Crescy Hall’, is worth nothing yearly after prayers, and the moiety is assessed at (taxatur ad) 20 marks yearly.

He died on 14 January last. Hugh Makerell , his son and next heir, is aged 16 years and more.

John Marschall, canon of Lincoln cathedral and Richard Tymburland, chaplain , were lately seised of the following manor and capital messuage, etc., in demesne as of fee. Thus seised, by a charter of theirs shown to the jurors, they demised the manor and capital messuage, etc., among other things, to Ralph Makerell, esquire , and Margery his wife and their heirs and assigns. The charter described the manor and capital messuage, etc., as all of their lands, tenements, rents, reversions and services in Breaston, Wilsthorpe and Stanton by Dale in Derbyshire and Blyth, Oldcotes, Hodsock Woodhouse and Clipstone in Nottinghamshire which they lately had, together with John Samon , now deceased, by enfeoffment of Thomas Boge and Nicholas Sandyacre . By virtue of this demise, Ralph and Margery were seised in demesne as of fee and Ralph died thus seised. Wilsthorpe, the manor, held of the bishop of Chester . There is a manorial site, worth nothing yearly; 14 bovates of land and meadow, each worth 40d. yearly; 40 a. meadow, each acre worth 8d. yearly; and 8s. rent, payable at Midsummer and Martinmas equally. Breaston, a capital messuage, worth nothing yearly, 12 other messuages, worth nothing yearly, a horse-mill, worth nothing yearly, 20 bovates of land and meadow, each worth 40d. yearly, and 70s. rent, payable as above, held of William, Lord La Zouche; and a messuage, worth nothing yearly, 10 bovates of land and meadow, each worth 40d. yearly, 4s. rent, payable as above, and rent of two roses and one peppercorn, payable at Midsummer, held of William Fitz William. Nicholas Wydmerpole of Stanton-on-the-Wolds, and Geoffrey Knyveton and Richard Coo, chaplain , both of Nottingham, were lately seised of the following manors in demesne as of fee, which, by a charter shown to the jurors, they granted to Ralph and Margery, in the name of Ralph Makerell of Hodsock, esquire , and Margery his wife and their heirs and assigns. The charter described the grant as being of their manors in Stanton by Dale, Derbyshire, called ‘Davers’ and ‘Muskham’, and all their other lands, tenements, meadows and pastures in the same vill which they lately had by enfeoffment of the said Ralph Makerell . By virtue of this grant, Ralph and Margery were seised of the manors in demesne as of fee for 30 years and Ralph died thus seised. Stanton by Dale, the manors called ‘Davers’ and ‘Muskham’, held of the said Lord La Zouche. In these manors are 5 messuages, 10 cottages and the manorial sites, worth nothing yearly; 20 bovates of land and meadow, each worth 40d. yearly; and 10s. rent, payable at Midsummer and Martinmas equally.

Walter Carleton , son and heir of Thomas Carleton of Lincoln, was formerly seised of the following messuage, etc., in demesne as of fee, which, by his charter, shown to the jurors, he granted to Ralph Makerell, esquire , and Margery his wife and their heirs and assigns. The charter described the messuage, etc., as his capital messuage, 30 a. land, 10 a. meadow and 30s. free and quit rent and all other lands, tenements, meadow, rents, reversions and services in the same vill and parish. By virtue of this grant, Ralph and Margery were seised in demesne as of fee and Ralph died thus seised. Carlton in Lindrick, a messuage, worth nothing yearly, 7 cottages, worth nothing yearly, 30 a. land, each acre worth 2d. yearly, and 10 a. meadow, each acre worth 8d. yearly, held of William, Lord Fitzhugh ; and 30s. rent, payable at Lady Day and the Nativity of Mary equally, held of the king by service of 6d. rent for a pair of gilt spurs, to be paid at the king’s Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff at Michaelmas. Richard Wentworth and Richard Hudson were lately seised of the following in demesne as of fee, which, by a charter of theirs, shown to the jurors, they granted to Ralph and Margery and their heirs and assigns, described in the charter as all their lands and tenements which they lately had together with William Wylughby, chaplain , now deceased, by grant of Ralph and Margery in the same vills and territories. By virtue of this, Ralph and Margery were seised in demesne as of fee and Ralph died thus seised. Sturton le Steeple and Fenton, a capital messuage, worth nothing yearly, a horse-mill, worth nothing yearly, 100 a. land and 40 a. meadow, worth 40s. yearly, and 60s. rent, payable at Pentecost and Martinmas in equal parts, held of Henry, cardinal of England , Henry, archbishop of Canterbury , Thomas, bishop of Durham, and Walter Lord Hungerford, as of their honour of Tickhill. Thomas Belwode , John Graystok, clerk , and William Farceux, vicar of Misterton , were lately seised of the following manor, etc., in demesne as of fee, which, by a charter shown to the jurors, they granted to Ralph and Margery, described as Ralph Makerell of Hodsock, esquire , and Margery his wife, and their heirs and assigns. The charter described the manor, etc., as the manor of Hayton, 4 messuages, 16 tofts, 466 1/2 a. land, 92 1/2 a. meadow and 46 s. rent in Hayton, Clarborough, Welham, Moorhouse, Lound, Walkeringham, Misterton and West Stockwith. By virtue of this, Ralph and Margery were seised in demesne as of fee and Ralph died thus seised. Hayton, the manor, held of the archbishop of York , annual value 10 marks. Misterton and West Stockwith, 2 messuages, worth nothing yearly, 5 bovates of land and meadow, each worth 40d. yearly, and 4s. rent, payable at Michaelmas and Easter equally, held of the said cardinal, archbishop of Canterbury , bishop and Walter, Lord Hungerford , as of their honour of Tickhill. Walkeringham, 2 bovates of land and meadow, each worth 40d. yearly, held of the prior of Newstead . After the death of Katherine his wife he held the following by curtesy from the inheritance of Gervase de Clifton, knight , aged 40 years and more, son and heir of Katherine. Hodsock, the manor, held of the said cardinal, archbishop of Canterbury , bishop and Walter, Lord Hungerford , as of their honour of Tickhill. There is a manorial site, 24 messuages and 8 cottages, worth nothing yearly; a park, worth nothing yearly beyond enclosure, sustenance of the beasts and the parker’s fee; 2 carucates of demesne land, worth 2 marks yearly; 88 bovates of land, each worth 5s. yearly; 4 run-down and exceedingly ruinous watermills, worth nothing yearly until repaired; 100 a. timber wood, its herbage worth nothing yearly; and 16s. rent, payable at Candlemas, Pentecost and Michaelmas equally. The advowson of the hospital of St John the Evangelist outside Blyth belongs to the manor, worth nothing yearly after prayers, which hospital is taxed at 5 marks yearly.
