The scribe, in any case, may have mistaken his name for that of Thomas Bretton who is recorded in other inquisitions (e.g. 352, 354) as being fully involved. There are three occasions in the C 139 manuscript where the lands etc. in Hambleden are described. In the first, the original text has been erased and replaced with the description of land, meadow, wood, and rent, but the second and third occasions record only the existence of 100 a. land and 20 a. wood. The original amendment thus seems to have been incompletely made.
