Ellen Halgate was formerly seised of the manor of Marston in her demesne as of fee and granted this to Joan Neweland for life, and Joan was seised in her demesne as of free tenement. Ellen entered into possession of the manor and expelled Joan. By virtue of this disseisin, Ellen granted the manor to John Barton, esquire , and his heirs. He was seised in his demesne as of fee and granted the manor to Roger de Ask and William de Burgh , esquires, and their heirs. They were seised in their demesne as of fee and granted the manor to Ellen and John Barton, esquire , for life, and Ellen and John were seised in their demesne as of free tenement. By their deed shown to the jurors and dated at Kirkby Fleetham on 1 May 1413, Roger and William granted the reversion after the deaths of John and Ellen to Thomas Barton , son of John, and the heirs of his body, remainder to certain other persons specified fully in the deed. John and Ellen attorned to Thomas. Joan afterwards entered into possession by virtue of the grant from Ellen and continued in this estate during her lifetime. Ellen and then John died, and Joan was seised in her demesne as of free tenement and died seised of this estate. Thomas Barton survives. Marston: the manor is held of the king in chief by 1/10 knight’s fee. In the manor there is the site, its herbage worth 4s. yearly; 8 bovates of demesne land demised to tenants, each worth 2s. yearly; 10 a. meadow, each acre worth 10d. yearly; 11 1/2 bovates of land, each worth 3s. 4d. yearly; 8s. 10d. assize rent from tenants at Michaelmas and Easter; 8 waste tofts, worth 8s. yearly; a watermill, waste and ruinous, worth nothing yearly; and a court, worth nothing yearly after the fees of its steward and bailiff.
She died on 4 July last. Margaret, wife of Thomas Saltmerssh , is her daughter and next heir, aged 23 years and more. [Foot:] memorandum that this inquisition was delivered to Chancery on 24 August 1433.
