He held no lands or tenements of the king in chief in demesne or service or of any others.

He died on 25 March last. Isabel, now wife of John Roos , Elizabeth, now wife of John Northwode , Margaret, now wife of Robert Moresby , and Anne, now wife of Robert Rouclyff , are his kinswomen and next heirs as daughters and heirs of Miles de Etton , his son and heir. Isabel is aged 25 years and more, Elizabeth 24 years and more, Margaret 22 years and more, and Anne 17 years and more.

He held the following to himself and the heirs of his body by grant of Thomas Haxey . Shelford, a messuage and 2 a. land, held of the king in chief by fealty for all service, annual value 11d. By a fine levied [on the morrow of St John the Baptist ] 1402 [CP 25/1/186/37, no. 7], and shown to the jurors, between William Thirnyng, chevalier , now deceased, and Joan his wife, who survives, querents and John de Etton and Katherine his wife, deforciants, the deforciants granted 22 marks rent yearly from the manor of Laxton – half at Martinmas and half at Pentecost by the hands of John and Katherine and her heirs – to William and Joan for the life of Joan, with right of distraint in the manor for the life of Joan, of all goods and chattels from John, Katherine, her heirs or whoever held the manor in the future, in case of arrears. William and Joan were seised for the rest of William’s lifetime and Joan remains so.

Kipling Cotes, the manor, held of the archbishop of York , service unknown. In the manor there is the site, worth nothing yearly because totally wasted; 50 a. arable, each acre worth 3d. yearly; and 100 a. pasture, each acre worth 1d. yearly and no more because unenclosed. He held the following to himself and the heirs of his body by grant of Thomas Frebody Burn, 1 a. land held of the king by fealty for all service, annual value 6d. He held the following to himself and the male heirs of his body by grant of Robert de Foxley, rector of Stonegrave church , Robert Cruel, rector of Oswaldkirk church , John de Flaynburgh, vicar of Helmsley church , and Thomas de Askham, vicar of Ampleforth church , to Thomas de Etton and Elizabeth his wife for life with successive remainders to the following, as is clear more fully in a charter shown to the jurors: Thomas their son and heir and the male heirs of his body; any other son or sons of Thomas the father, from son to son and their male heirs; the daughter or daughters of Thomas the father; Thomas Farefax and Elizabeth his wife for life; William their son and the male heirs of his body; Thomas his brother and the male heirs of his body; John their brother and the male heirs of his body; Alice, sister of Thomas de Etton , then wife of William de Thornton , and her heirs. Thomas de Etton and Elizabeth were seised as of free tenement and died seised of this estate. Thomas their son entered after their death by virtue of his remainder and was seised in his demesne as of fee tail. He had issue John, his first-born, and George, William and Richard younger sons, and daughters Katherine and Elizabeth. He died seised of this estate and John his son then entered likewise, as his son and heir. He had issue Miles his elder son, and Ives, William and Alexander, younger sons. Miles had issue Isabel, Elizabeth, Margaret and Anne and died without male heir. John de Etton, knight , died seised of this estate by virtue of the entail and Ives is his son and male heir, aged 30 years and more. Gilling, the manor, annual value £10, and Everley, 3 tofts and 3 bovates, annual value 10s., held of Elizabeth, duchess of Norfolk , of her manor of Thirsk, service unknown.

Order to partition lands held by John de Etton, knight , by curtesy after the death of Katherine his wife of the inheritance of the four sisters and coheirs as in 43, between these sisters and their respective husbands, saving the rightful dower assigned to Elizabeth, who was the wife of John de Etton [CFR 1430–37, pp. 157–8].
