John de Loudham, knight , was formerly seised in his demesne as of fee of a messuage, 30 a. land and 10 a. meadow in Carlton in Lindrick, called ‘le Whithall’, annual value 20s., and 30s. assize rent in the same vill at Michaelmas and Lady Day equally. They are all held of the king in chief in socage by service of 6d. for a pair of gilt spurs to the king at Michaelmas for all service. By his deed shown in evidence to the jurors he granted these – described as 30s. annual rent in Carlton in Lindrick from free tenants there with his whole lordship there in wardships, marriages, reliefs, escheats and suit to the three-weekly court from these tenants, fines for offences against the assizes of bread and ale, and all other services of the tenants, and other approvements in and beyond the vill belonging to the 30s. rent and whole lordship, both in watermills, wastes, heaths, moors, marshes, lands, meadows and pasture, and in all other appurtenances without any reservation – to Thomas Carleton of Carlton in Lindrick (Carleton), clerk, and the heirs of his body. Thomas was seised of the messuage, land, meadow and rent in his demesne as of fee tail according to the form of the grant. From him right descended successively to the following according to the form of the grant: Henry his son and heir; Thomas Carleton, esquire , as son and heir of Henry; and Walter Carleton as son and heir of Thomas, son of Henry. Walter was seised in his demesne as of fee tail similarly until Henry Karleton , deceased, named in the writ, unjustly and without judgement disseised him. Henry was seised in his demesne as of fee by reason of this disseisin and died seised of this estate.
He died on 3 February 1428. The same Walter is his kinsman and next heir as son of Thomas his brother, aged 30 years and more.
Walter took all issues from the messuage, land, meadow and rent from the time of his death until the day of this inquisition, occupying continuously, title unknown.
