SIBYL WIDOW OF THOMAS GIFFARD OF TWYFORD, KNIGHT

OXFORDSHIRE. Inquisition. Woodstock 18 October 1429. [ Rede ].

Jurors: John Spere ; Thomas Carsewell ; William Style ; John Erlestoke ; John Leche ; John Tunford ; Robert Croxford ; Robert Carpenter ; William Sylvester ; Thomas Shove ; John Swyfte ; and John Tymmes .

She held no lands or tenements in demesne as of fee. William de Hampton, parson of Hinton Waldrist (Hynton), Richard de Cudlyngton, parson of Croughton , William Gardyner, parson of Somerton , and John de Bedeford, clerk , were lately seised of the following in demesne as of fee. Fringford, the manor, annual value 100s., held of the king in chief as of his castle of Dover by fealty and castleward, quantity unknown. They gave the manor to Thomas Giffard, knight , and Sibyl then his wife, for their lives, with remainder to Roger son of Thomas and to Joan his wife, daughter of Baldewin de Bereford, knight, and to the heirs of their bodies. Failing such issue, the manor should successively remain to the following: John brother of Roger and the heirs of his body; Thomas brother of John and the heirs of his body; William brother of Thomas and the heirs of his body; and, finally, to the right heirs of Thomas Giffard . The grant was made by licence of ‪ Richard II as shown by letters patent dated Westminster 6 July 1383 [CPR 1381–1385, pp. 295–6]. The letters were shown to the jurors. Thomas Giffard, knight , died then Joan wife of Roger died without heir of her body by Roger, and the three brothers, John, Thomas, and William, each died without heir of his body. After Sibyl’s death, the manor should remain to Thomas son of Roger, kin and heir of Thomas Giffard, knight , as the son of Roger son of Thomas. Roger son of Thomas was lately seised of the following in demesne as of fee. Somerton, the manor, annual value £6 4s., with advowson of the church there on every second presentation when it falls, held of the king in chief as of his castle of Dover by fealty and castleward. He demised the manor and advowson to Sibyl for her life, with reversion to Roger and his heirs, by licence of ‪ Richard II as shown by letters patent dated Eltham 21 July 1395 [CPR 1391–1396, p. 608]. The letters were shown to the jurors. Roger afterwards married Isabel Stretele and they had issue: Thomas Giffard , still living. Roger died on 14 April 1409. After his death and after that of Sibyl, reversion of the manor and advowson descended to Thomas son of Roger, a minor in the king’s wardship.

She died on 26 February last.

Henry V granted custody of all the lands and tenements that were of Roger Giffard that came to his hands owing to the death of Roger and the minority of his heir, to William, Lord Ros of Helmsley , to hold from Roger’s death.The grant was made by letters patent dated 21 October 1409 [CPR 1408–1413, p. 114]; and Thomas, late duke of Clarence, had the estate, as confirmed by letters patent dated Westminster 3 May 1415 [CPR 1413–1416, pp. 321–2]. The duke afterwards granted all his estate in this custody and marriage, with any lands and tenements that he might have in future in this regard, to John Stokes, esquire , and Isabel his wife, both still living, and to their assigns.

Thomas son of Roger is heir of Roger, and aged 21 and more. Eleanor is daughter and next heir of Sybil, and aged 23 and more.
