He was seised of the following in demesne as of fee. Sarre, the manor, otherwise called ‘Serrecourt’, annual value 100s., held of the archbishop of Canterbury as of his manor of St Nicholas at Wade on the Isle of Thanet, in right of his church of Christchurch at Canterbury, by knight service. St Laurence, the manor, otherwise called Upper Court, on the Isle of Thanet. There is the manorial site, worth nothing yearly because ruinous and gavelet, and a garden around the manor, containing an acre of land, worth 6d. yearly. There is 8s. 8d. assize rent, payable at Easter and Michaelmas by equal parts; and 150 a. arable, each acre worth 6d. yearly. Chislet, 200 a. marsh, each acre worth 13s. 4d. yearly. He granted the manors and marsh to John Kyriell his son, and to Alice, his son’s wife, and the heirs male of their bodies together, with reversion to John Kyriell, knight , and his heirs in perpetuity. John and Alice had issue: Joan Kyriell . John, senior , died and right of reversion descended to John Kyriell as his son and heir. John and Alice died without heir male of their bodies, and the manors and marsh descended to Joan Kyriell as the daughter and heir of John Kyriell , son. She married John Wykes and they granted the manors and marsh to Henry Pinystede , citizen and draper of London, and Edmund Painton , and to their heirs and assigns in perpetuity. By a fine levied in 1394 [CP 25/1/110/243 no. 879], Henry and Edmund granted the manors and marsh to John Wykes and Joan, and to the heirs of John Wykes , to hold of the chief lords of that fee by due service in perpetuity. Joan died. John Wykes afterwards married Agnes and they had issue: John Wykes . During the lifetime of John Wykes , father, the manor of St Laurence and the marsh were held of the abbot , monastery, and church of St Augustine’s, Canterbury, in right of the church and monastery, and are still held in this way. The manor is held by knight service and the marsh is held by fealty in socage. The monastery and church of St Augustine was founded by the present king’s ancestors, former kings of England, and is thus in the gift of the present king. He has wardship of all its temporalities during vacancies and, after the death of Marcel, the most recent abbot, the king seized all the temporalities into his hands, and they are still there for that reason. John Wykes , father, died seised in demesne as of fee of the manors and marsh.

John his son was then, and still is, a minor, being aged 15 years and, when the manors and marsh descended to him, as son and heir of John Wykes , the king took custody of the manor of St Laurence because of the vacancy at St Augustine’s.

Since 10 November last, the date of John Wykes’s death, and during the vacancy until now, the issues of this manor have been taken by Thomas Kyriell for his own use. The archbishop seized the manor of Sarre in the name of wardship, and it is still in his hands. One part of this inquisition was sealed by the jurors and remains with the escheator. The other part was sealed by the escheator and remains with the jurors.
