The jurors, separately examined, say that Thomas was aged 21 years on 11 November last, that he was born at Black Notley and baptised in the church baptistery there on 11 November 1404 [sic], and that his godfathers were Thomas Nallyngherst and Thomas Aspall , his godmother Alice late wife of Clement Spyce . Asked how they know, they give the following reasons, relating to events 21 years ago [sic]. John Smyth of Braintree, aged 60 years and more, espoused Alice, still his wife, in Black Notley church that day. John Wayte , 59 years and more, was riding his horse at Black Notley that day and the horse threw him to the ground and he broke his left leg. John Whelere of Rivenhall, 49 years and more, says that Richard Whelere his father died and was buried in the churchyard that day. John Tylere , 54 years and more, says that Richard Clerk, chaplain at the church, celebrated his first mass that day. John Halle , 55 years and more, says that at Braintree his grange was pulled down and thrown to the ground by a storm that day. John atte Parke , 47 years and more, says that Isabel his daughter espoused John Sweyne in the church that day. William Welwyk , 62 years and more, says that James Feyces killed William ?Amell at Great or Little Leighs with a drawn sword that day. Edmund Bryd , 48 years and more, says that he placed John his son as an apprentice with John Weles in Colchester that day, to learn the art of a leather-dresser. Robert de Bryche , 53 years and more, says that on the Monday before Thomas’s birth, Margaret his wife died and was buried in White Notley church. Geoffrey Lylye , 49 years and more, says that Nicholas his son by Juliane, then this wife, was born that day. John Samwell , 53 years and more, says that he fell from a cart and broke his right arm that day. John Herde of Bradwell, 61 years and more, says that he was ill in bed that day in his house at Black Notley when a fire burned down his grange.
