She held no lands or tenements in her demesne as of fee or in service of the king in chief. She held in her demesne as of fee a messuage called ‘Poldre’ in the parish of Stourmouth and 48 a. arable and pasture for 30 cows in the parishes of Stourmouth, Preston, Elmstone and Wickhambreaux. The messuage, 24 1/2 a. arable and the pasture are held of the archbishop of Canterbury of his manors of Down Barton and Wingham in gavelkind, service unknown; the residual 23 1/2 a. arable are held of the prioress of Dartford of her manor of Preston in gavelkind, service unknown. The site of the messuage is worth nothing yearly, each acre of arable is worth 12d. yearly and pasture for each cow is worth 12d. yearly. She held the following in her demesne as of fee tail. Isle of Thanet, a messuage called Dane Court in the parish of St Peter, 150 a. arable and £4 annual rent at the four annual terms in the parishes of St Peter , St John the Baptist and St Laurence and Minster, of the abbot of the monastery of St Augustine, Canterbury, of his manor of Minster in gavelkind, service unknown. The messuage is worth nothing yearly, each acre of arable 8d. yearly. Isle of Thanet, a toft and a croft of pasture, 30 a. arable, pasture for 100 sheep and 20 a. underwood in the parish of Acol of the prior of Christ Church, Canterbury, of his manor of Monkton in gavelkind, service unknown. The toft together with the croft is worth 6s. 8d. yearly, each acre of arable 4d. yearly, the pasture 40s. yearly and each acre of the 4 a. underwood which can be felled seasonably each year, 5s. yearly. Chislet, pasture for 400 sheep in this parish, part of which pasture is held of the same abbot of St Augustine’s by service of 1/2 of 1/4 knight’s fee, and the residual part is held of the same abbot of his manors of Chislet and Sturry in gavelkind, service unknown. The pasture for each 100 sheep is worth 33s. 4d. yearly. Laurence de Sancto Nicholas was formerly seised in his demesne as of fee of the messuage, arable, rent, toft, croft, pasture and wood in the Isle of Thanet and the pasture in Chislet which she held in her demesne as of fee tail. By his charter dated at ?Downe (le Dane) 5 ‪Henry IV, he granted them, described as all the lands and tenements which he had in Kent except 2 a. land below his garden at ?Downe, to Solomon atte Berton and Joan his wife, daughter of Laurence, and the heirs of their bodies, remainder in full to William atte Berton , now deceased, and John atte Berton his son who survives, to hold in fee simple. Solomon and Joan were seised and had issue Margaret, named in the writ. Solomon died and Richard Fyneux, esquire , then married Joan and they had two sons who survive. Joan died seised of this estate and the lands and tenements then descended to Margaret as daughter and heir of Solomon and Joan, in fee tail by virtue of the gift. John Excestre married Margaret. She died seised of this estate without heir of her body and the messuage, toft, croft, arable, pasture, wood and rent then remained to John atte Berton , his heirs and assigns according to the gift and remainder. He entered and occupied the lands and tenements as his proper, own and free tenement.
She died on 9 May last. Her next heirs to the lands and tenements which she held in her demesne as of fee in gavelkind and not fee tail are the same John atte Berton and Walter atte Berton his brother, her uncles as brothers of Solomon her father. John is aged 46 years and more, William 40 years and more.
