Long before his death, Richard Courtenay, clerk , was seised of the manor of Milton Damerel except for the advowson of its church, by grant of Robert de Vaggescomb, late canon of the cathedral church of Exeter and rector of Parkham church, to Hugh Courtenay, late earl of Devon , and Margaret his wife, for their lives, remainder to Peter de Courtenay, knight , and successively for want of male heirs to Philip de Courtenay, knight , and Peter’s brother, and to the right heirs of the same Hugh. Hugh and Margaret were seised, after whose deaths the following were seised by virtue of the remainder: Peter, who died without male heir; Philip; and then Richard, as the son and heir of Philip. He gave the manor except knights’ fees to Robert Westcote, esquire , for life, reversion to Richard Courtenay and his heirs, this demise beginning 27 March 1410 with Robert paying £4 legal English money at Michaelmas and Easter in equal portions to Richard Courtenay , his heirs and assigns. Robert was seised of the manor as of his free tenement and Richard was seised of the £4 rent and died seised, as bishop of Norwich , of this estate. After Richard’s death ‪Henry IV took the rent during the whole of Robert’s lifetime by reason of the minority of Philip Courtenay , kinsman and heir of Richard, as the son of John his brother. After Robert’s death the manor was taken into the hands of ‪Henry V‬ by reason of Philip’s minority and thus remained until, by letters patent of unknown date, he granted custody of the manor to Geoffrey Mugge , who survives, until Philip’s majority [CFR 1413–22, p.384]. At Robert’s death, ‪Henry V‬ and Geoffrey Mugge occupied separately as above, Geoffrey still doing so, and they took all issues separately for the same time, Geoffrey doing so presently. Milton Damerel. The manor is held of Thomas son and heir of Hugh, late earl of Devon , and in the king’s wardship, by knight service, annual value 100s.
He died on 29 September 1419. Humphrey Westcote his son is his next heir, aged 7 years and more.
