JOHN MARNY BROTHER OF THOMAS MARNY, CHEVALIER

Thomas held of ‪Henry V‬ in chief and Margaret died a minor in ‪Henry V‬ ’s wardship. Walter Lyvus , to whom ‪Henry V‬ granted custody until heir’s majority, to be informed [CFR 1413–22, pp.408 –9]. He claims to have been born at Layer Marney and baptised in the church there, as detailed in the writ. The jurors, separately examined, say that John was aged 21 years [recte born] on 14 August 1402, his godfathers were John Howard, knight , and William Westbrome then prior of St Botulph’s, Colchester, and his godmother Philippe Passelewe . Asked how they know, they give the following recollections of events 21 years ago [sic]. John Marchaunt , aged 60 years and more, says that on 10 August 1402, William Keche, clerk , was instituted and inducted at Layer Marney as rector of the parish church, and the following 14 August baptised John Marny in the baptistery. John Marchaunt served the rector. Walter Tybenham , 50 years and more, says that on 14 August 1401 [sic], Eleanor his daughter died and was buried at Layer Marney. Richard Gylot , 48 years and more, says that on 25 July 1401 [sic] at Layer Marney he married Joan his late wife, then servant of Elizabeth mother of John Marny , and the following 14 August John was born. Richard Boleyne , 56 years and more, was at Layer Marney at the time of John’s baptism and held a burning torch there. John Peverell, senior , 46 years and more, immediately after the baptism was playing football at Layer Marney with his fellows and broke his left shin. Nicholas Duke , 58 years and more, says that at Layer Breton on 31 July 1401 [sic], he drove his cart with hay from the manor of Layer Breton’s demesne meadow to the manor’s grange. He fell from the laden cart in the grange and broke his left arm. The following 14 August John was born. Henry Poynaunt , 54 years and more, was at Layer Marney with Joan his wife when Elizabeth mother of John gave birth and they were at her churching on 8 September 1402. John Waselyn of Layer Breton, 52 years and more, says that on 14 August 1402 Alan Waselyn his father died at Layer Breton, and he thereby inherited lands and tenements in Layer Breton. Richard Hervy , 57 years and more, had Thomas his first-born son baptised in the baptistery of Layer Marney church that day. Thomas was aged 21 years last 14 August. John Waselyn of Great or Little Birch, 59 years and more, says William his son took holy orders long before that day, and celebrated his first mass at Layer Marney church the day John was born and baptised. Thomas Page , 51 years and more, says his house in Layer Marney burned down immediately after John’s birth. Nicholas Whithed , 47 years and more, says at Layer Marney that day John Warde hanged himself with a hemp cord and he came to see John hanging. Returning he met a woman carrying John Marny to Layer Marney church for baptism.
