THOMAS SEINTCLER BROTHER AND HEIR OF JOHN SEINTCLER SON AND HEIR OF PHILIP SEINTCLER, CHEVALIER , AND MARGARET HIS WIFE

[Wymbyssh] Regarding inheritance from his brother John Seintcler , who died a minor in ‪Henry V‬ ’s wardship and was son and heir of Philip and Margaret who held of ‪Henry IV in chief. Ralph Radmylde and Richard Bannebury and other persons, to whom custody was granted by royal commission, to be informed [CFR 1413–22, pp.285–6]. [Dorse:] Ralph Radmylde and Richard Bannebury informed of specified place and date but did not come.

The jurors, separately examined, say that Thomas was aged 21 years on 28 October last and that he was born at East Grinstead and baptised in the church baptistery there on 28 October 1401. Asked how they know, they give the following reasons, the events all being 21 [sic] years ago. John Woghere of East Grinstead, aged 45 years and more, says that on 13 January 1402 after Thomas’s baptism he married Margery, still his wife, at East Grinstead. Richard atte Dene , 50 years and more, says that John his son was born at East Grinstead on 11 November immediately after 28 October. William Telgherst , 60 years and more, says that on 8 June 1401 at Cuckfield, he espoused Nichole his late wife and the following 28 October Thomas was born. John Dyn , 70 years and more, was present at East Grinstead that day and saw John Croxton, esquire , carrying a burning torch before Thomas to the church for baptism. William Haseldenne , 47 years and more, says that John his first-born son was born at East Grinstead and baptised in the church there on 30 November immediately after 28 October 1401. John Mason, senior , 60 years and more, made a wax candle weighing 2lb. on that day, to burn and hold in the church at Thomas’s baptism, for which he has not yet been paid. John Modell , 63 years and more, was present in church that day and watched William Walyes holding a wax torch by the font while Thomas was baptised. John Basset of Hartfield, 60 years and more, says that at East Grinstead on 2 October 1401, Thomas Wodye , his kinsman, married Alice widow of Richard Smyth of Stanstrete, and the same day he enfeoffed Thomas and Alice with lands and tenements in East Grinstead for their lives. The following 28 October Thomas brother of John was born. Thomas Cessyngham , 48 years and more, says that on 6 January 1402, Philip Cessyngham his father died at Hartfield, and he thereby inherited lands and tenements in Hartfield. John Skynnere , 60 years and more, says that John son of William Basset and to whom he is godfather, was born and baptised at East Grinstead church on 11 November following the 28 October 1401. William Wreghte of Hartfield, 61 years and more, was at East Grinstead with John Wreghte his father when Margaret, Thomas’s mother, gave birth and was churched on 11 November 1401 after his birth, and saw the wife of Richard Mansey present Margaret a cock.... John atte Hamme of Withyham, 60 years and more, was present in church on that day when Thomas was baptised and watched Richard Mansey, esquire , carry a basin and ewer of silver with a towel from the baptistery to the altar.
