354 Writ melius inquirendo. ‡ 26 November 1423. [Wymbyssh] Whether Richard de Sancto Mauro’s daughter was named Ellen or Alice and whether the right name of his mother was Elizabeth or Ela. Alice daughter of Richard claims that her name was inadvertently written in the inquisition as ‘Ellen’ and that ‘Ela’ was written for ‘Elizabeth’ as the name of the other daughter and heir of Agnes daughter of John Pavely [CIPM XXI, no. 221].

As detailed in the writ, the earlier inquisition found that he was seised in his demesne as of fee of the manor of Avon, held of the abbot of Malmesbury by suit to his court baron at Malmesbury every three weeks. He gave this manor to Walter Pavely, chevalier , and Ellen his wife and the heirs of their bodies. Walter and Ellen were seised in the above form. Walter died without heir by Ellen, who then married Edward Cerne , similarly deceased.
She died on 7 July 1418 and the manor should revert, because she and Walter died without heirs, to William Cheyny, knight , John Chidyok and Ellen [sic] daughter of Richard de Sancto Mauro, as kin and heirs of John Pavely , namely William as son of Joan one of the daughters and heirs of John Pavely , John Chidyok as son of Ela one of the daughters and heirs of Agnes other daughter of John Pavely , and Alice as daughter of Richard son of Elizabeth the other daughter of Agnes. The right and proper name of Richard de Sancto Mauro’s daughter is and was Alice and not Ellen. The right and proper name of his mother was Ela and not Elizabeth.
