By letters patent dated 12 August 1405 [CPR 1405–8, p.41], ‪Henry IV granted to William Bardolf, knight , the manors of Whinburgh, Cantley and Strumpshaw, with the advowsons of the churches and knights’ fees belonging to the manors, which came into the king’s hands through the forfeiture of Thomas late Lord de Bardolf . [Letters patent] shown to the jurors and dated at Westminster, 19 June 1408 [CPR 1405–8, pp.448–9], related, among other things, that William Clyfford, chevalier , and Anne his wife, and William Philip , now knight, and Joan his wife, daughters and heirs of Thomas, Lord de Bardolf , deceased, gave the king such information that by letters patent, 12 August 1405, he had granted the manors which had come into his hands as forfeit on Thomas’s rebellion, to William Bardolf , described as William Bardolf, chevalier , for life, reversion reserved to the king. As an act of grace and in agreement with his council, and by fine of 200 marks paid to the king’s use, the king now granted the reversion of the manors with fees, advowsons, courts, liberties, franchises, waifs, strays, chattels of fugitives and felons, view of frankpledge, leets and all that pertains to the view and leet, with all other issues, profits and easement whatsoever belonging to the manors, to William Clyfford, chevalier , Anne, William Philip and Joan, in survivorship, and the heirs of their bodies, reversion to the king and his heirs. As an act of grace and with the assent of his council the king further granted that this should not be to the prejudice or exclusion of any entail or any parcel of the premises on Anne and Joan and their heirs. William Bardolf attorned to William Clyfford and Anne and William Philipp and Joan and died seised of this estate according to the above. The manor of Whinburgh, except 128 a. land in the manor, is held of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee. The 128 a. are held of the manor of Hardingham, service unknown. In the manor there are the site, containing [at least] 2... with buildings, worth nothing yearly; 328 a. arable, each acre worth 4d. yearly; 20 a. pasture, each acre worth 6d. yearly; 20 a. meadow, each acre worth 12d. yearly; 100 a. substantial timber, worth nothing this year because not cut; 7 messuages and 40 a. land which persons hold at will by service which amounts to 26s. 8d. yearly at Christmas, Easter, Midsummer and Michaelmas in equal portions; and £13 13s. 4d. assize rents from lands and tenements held of the manor, at the feasts of St Andrew, Lady Day, Midsummer and Michaelmas in equal portions. The advowsons of the churches of Whinburgh, annual value £10, and Garveston, annual value 20 marks, belong to the manor. In the manor of Cantley there are the site, containing ?3 a...., worth nothing yearly; 52 a. arable, each acre worth 4d. yearly; 60 a. pasture, each acre worth 4d. yearly; 3 a. meadow, each acre worth 12d. yearly; 6 a. substantial timber, worth nothing this year because not cut; 13 messuages and 100 a. land which persons hold at will by services and customs amounting to 106s. 8d. yearly at Christmas, Easter, Midsummer and Michaelmas in equal portions; £8 assize rents from lands and tenements, at the same feasts in equal portions; and perquisites of a court baron held every three weeks and view of frankpledge, worth 3s. 4d. yearly. The advowson of Cantley church belongs to the manor, annual value of the church £20. In the manor of Cantley, namely in the vills of West Caister and East Caister in East Flegg hundred there are additionally 1 a. land with a cottage built on it, worth... yearly; 120 a. arable, each acre worth 12d. yearly; 25 a. pasture, each acre worth 12d. yearly; a windmill, worth 6s. 8d. yearly; £8 4s. assize rents at the same feasts in equal portions; and perquisites of the three-weekly court baron and the view of frankpledge held in Caister, worth 3s. 4d. yearly. The advowson of St Edmund’s church of East Caister belongs to the manor and the church is worth 10 marks yearly. The manor is held of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee. In the manor of Strumpshaw there are the site with buildings, containing 2 a. land, worth nothing yearly; 100 a. arable, each acre worth 4d. yearly; 20 a. pasture, each acre worth 2d. yearly; 7 a. meadow, each acre worth 6d. yearly; a marsh called ‘Dirtholm’, worth 20s. yearly; 4 a. substantial timber, worth nothing this year because not cut; 100s. assize rents from lands and tenements, at the same feasts in equal portions; 6 messuages and 30 a. land which persons hold at will by services and customs amounting to 40s. yearly at the same feasts in equal portions; and perquisites of a court baron held every three weeks and view of frankpledge, worth 2s. yearly. The manor is held of the king in chief by service of a knight’s fee. He held in his demesne as of fee the manor of Scratby. In the manor there are the site, containing 1 a. land, worth nothing yearly; 60 a. arable, each acre worth 2d. yearly; 40s. assize rents at the same feasts in equal portions; and perquisites of a court baron held every three weeks and view of frankpledge, worth 12d. yearly. It is held of Thomas Huntyngfeld by service of 1/4 [knight’s fee].
He died on 25 July last. Anne widow of William Clifford, knight , and Joan wife of William Phelipp, knight , are his kinswomen and next heirs as the daughters of Thomas his brother, Anne aged 34 years and more, Joan 33 years and more. William Clyfford died without heir of his body by Anne before the death of William Bardolf . The manors of Whinburgh, Cantley and Strumpshaw should thus remain to Anne and to William Philip and Joan according to the above.
