STAFFORDSHIRE. Inquisition. Stafford. 14 October 1423. [Cotes]

Jurors: John More ; John Bethom ; William Sale ; Hugh Palmer ; John Robyns ; Adam Serle ; Thomas de Eton ; Richard Banastre ; John Ruggeley ; William Baxter of Amerton; Richard Banastre [sic]; and Richard Hugyns .

He held the following for life by grant of Edmund, late earl of Stafford , reversion to Humphrey earl of Stafford as Edmund’s son and heir. Stafford, an enclosed pasture called ‘le Halgh’, near Stafford, containing 40 a. land within the lordship of Stafford castle, annual value of the pasture 26s. 8d. It is held of the king in chief by knight service as part of the castle and lordship of Stafford. Shredicote, a messuage, worth 12d. yearly; 40 a. arable, each acre worth 3d. yearly; 6 a. meadow, each acre worth 6d. yearly; 10 a. pasture, each acre worth 2d. yearly; and 4 a. wood, worth nothing yearly because not customarily felled. They are held as above. Barton, a messuage, worth 20d. yearly; 50 a. arable, each acre worth 2d. yearly; 5 a. meadow, each acre worth 6d. yearly; and 8 a. pasture, each acre worth yearly 3d. yearly. They are held as above. Stafford, a messuage in the borough, worth 10s. yearly, held of the bailiffs of the borough as the whole of Stafford is held, service unknown.

He died on 14 August 1415 [see also CIPM XX, nos 284–7]. William Galpyn is his kinsman and next heir as son of Eleanor his sister, and is aged 14 years and more. Humphrey earl of Stafford was aged 21 years and more on 15 August last.

Richard Knyghtley and Thomas Stokdale occupied all lands and tenements and took the issues from the time of his death until Humphrey’s majority by virtue of letters patent, and still do so [CFR 1413–22, pp.230–1].

Jurors: Edmund Daye and John Coton , of Turvey; Thomas Stevenes ; John Leyghton ; Thomas Stratton ; John Nowell ; John Spark ; Matthew Stepyng ; John Hende ; Walter Pecke ; William Hunte ; and William atte Welle .

He held for life the following land in Turvey: 25 a. arable in Newton Blossomville park, of which 5 a. were held of ‪Henry V‬ by service of 1/30 knight’s fee and 20 a. are held of the abbess of Elstow , service unknown, annual value 2d. an acre; and 50 a. arable as part of the manor of Newton Blossomville, of Gerard Braybrok, knight , service unknown, annual value 2d. an acre. Ralph Basset of Drayton Bassett, chevalier , was seised in his demesne as of fee of these lands and tenements and granted them to Elizabeth Beauchamp for life, reversion to himself and his heirs. He died and Elizabeth granted all her estate to Nicholas Bradshagh . Edmund, late earl of Stafford , kinsman and heir of Ralph Basset as son of Hugh son of Ralph son of Margaret daughter of Ralph father of Ralph father of this Ralph Basset recently deceased, ratified and confirmed Nicholas in the estate that he thereby had, and further granted the lands and tenements to him for life. Elizabeth and the late earl then died. Nicholas held for life, reversion to Edmund, late earl of Stafford and his heirs, and now to Humphrey earl of Stafford , Edmund’s son and heir, and his heirs.

Humphrey was aged 21 years and more on 15 August last. Date of death and heir as in 264.

Newton Blossomville, the manor, containing 100 a. arable, each acre worth 2d. yearly; 10 a. meadow, each acre worth 12d. yearly; 100 a. wood, worth nothing yearly because not customarily felled; and 40 a. pasture, each acre worth 2d. yearly. It is held of Richard Grey, Lord of Shirland , service unknown. Clifton Reynes, 2 messuages called ‘Botelers’ and ‘Wakes’, worth 20s. yearly, and 100 a. arable, each acre worth 2d. yearly. They are held of Reynold Grey, Lord of Ruthin , service unknown. Sherington, 50 a. arable, each acre worth 2d. yearly; 8 a. meadow, each acre worth 12d. yearly; and 10s. annual rent. They are held of the same Reynold, service unknown.
