By a fine levied in the court of ‪Henry V‬, mor. Ascension 1416 and afterwards recorded oct. Trin. 1416 [CP 25/1/201/35 m.31], between Richard Bruton, clerk , now deceased, and William Gascoigne , named in the writ, described as William Gascoigne of Bridgwater, quer. and John Garton, esquire , deforc., the deforc. recognised the hundred of Exton, 1/3 manors of Exton and Newton Plecy , and the advowson of the church and free chapel of Newton Plecy, to be the right of the quer. He granted that the reversion of these, which Richard Mayn then held for life of John’s inheritance, paying £12 yearly to John and his heirs at... and Easter in equal portions, should remain to the deforc., and their heirs, to hold of the king and his heirs for the due and customary services, paying £12 yearly to John for life after the death of Richard Mayn , as is contained more fully in the fine, one part of which and ‪Henry V‬ ’s licence being shown to the jurors [CPR 1416–22, p.32, 1 May 1416]. Richard Mayn attorned to Richard Bruton and William Gascoigne and they were seised of the rent and reversion. Richard Bruton died and William continued in his estate, dying seised of it in his demesne as of fee. Richard Mayn survives. The hundred, 1/3 manors, and advowson are held of the king in chief by service of 1/12 knight’s fee, annual value £12. He held the following in his demesne as of fee. Exton, 6 messuages, worth nothing yearly; 200 a. land, each acre worth 2d. yearly; 6 a. meadow, each acre worth 18d. yearly; and 3 a. wood, worth nothing yearly unless felled every tenth year when seasoned, and this present year is not time to fell. These are held of the heir of Richard de Plessetis, knight , by service of a rose at Midsummer. Ashington, the reversion of a messuage, 20 a. land and 6 a. meadow which Robert Purdy holds for life there by demise of this William Gascoigne , paying William and his heirs 13s. 4d. at Michaelmas and Easter in equal portions. The messuage, land and meadow are held of John Seyntbarbe, knight , service unknown, annual value nil above the rent. Robert Purdy survives. Bridgwater, 10 messuages and 4 tofts, held of Edmund earl of March, Richard earl of Warwick and the heir of Lord de la Zouche, service unknown. Each messuage is worth 2s. 6d. yearly, each toft 4d. yearly. Cossington, a messuage, 5 a. land and 1 a. meadow, held of the heir of Robert Brent, knight , service unknown. The messuage is worth nothing yearly, each acre of land 4d. yearly and the meadow 18d. yearly. Compton Dundon, a messuage, 4a. land and 1 a. meadow, held of John Milborn, junior , by service of 1d. at Michaelmas. Huntspill, 3 messuages, a toft, 20 a. land and 4 a. meadow, held of the heirs of Fulk Fitzwareyn by service of a root of ginger at Michaelmas. The messuages are worth nothing yearly, the toft 3d. yearly, each acre of land 5d. yearly and each acre of meadow ?19d. yearly. Bradney, 6 a. land and 3 a. meadow, held of Henry Horsy, junior , service unknown. Each acre of land is worth 4d. yearly, each acre of meadow 18d. yearly. East Bower, reversion of a messuage, 4 a. land and 1 a. meadow, which Margery Pethir holds for life by demise of William, paying him and his heirs 5s. at Michaelmas, Christmas, Easter and Midsummer in equal portions. They are held of Thomas Mychell and John Besyll , service unknown, annual value nil above the rent. Margery survives. Wembdon, 10 a. land and 26 a. meadow, held of Thomas Michell , service unknown. Each acre of land is worth 4d. yearly, each acre of meadow 20d. yearly. He died seised in his demesne as of fee of the reversions of the following lands and tenements in Chilton Trinity, held of Henry Horsy, junior , respective, services unknown. He died on 5 April 1423. Thomas Gascoigne is his brother and next heir, aged 30 years and more.
