137 Writ. ‡ 18 February 1423. [Wymbyssh] Regarding lands held by knight service of the heir of Hugh de Courtenay, late earl of Devon , a minor in ‪the king’s wardship.

Richard Hankeford and Henry Foleford , deceased, and Nicholas Tremeyn who survives, were lately seised in their demesne as of fee of 1/2 manors of Stadbury and Aveton Gifford and 1/2 advowson of the church of Aveton Gifford and chantry of Lixton at the altar of St Mary in that church. By their indented charter dated at Aveton Gifford, 22 November 1416, they demised these moieties to John Wibbury , styled esquire, for life, remainder – with the issues, reversions and profits from the moieties and from the manor of Chagford, all messuages, lands, tenements, rents, services and reversions of all tenancies whatsoever in Chagford and Cullaton, all lands and tenements in Scobbiscombe in Holbeton, and from a close called ‘Smytheswillespark’ in Holbeton, which were lately John Wibbury’s – to Lena his wife, who survives, to provide for her sons by him, until she remarry; immediate remainder of the moieties if she remarry to the heirs of John’s body; remainder to her for life, on condition that she provide annually a chaplain to celebrate divine service in the parish church of Little Torrington for the souls of John and all his family, ancestors, friends and benefactors, granting and entailing by fee simple in the manner and form that John or his heirs declare in their writings or testaments, sealed with their seals, as is contained more fully in the charter. John died seised in his demesne as of free tenement. Lena is now pregnant by John and has not married since his death. Aveton Gifford. The 1/2 manor and the advowson of the church and chantry are held of Thomas son and heir of Hugh Courtenay, late earl of Devon , and a minor in ‪the king’s wardship, of his castle of Plympton by knight service, annual value £10 13s. 4d. Stadbiry. The 1/2 manor is held of the lords of Bikefordwalles, service unknown, annual value 66s. 8d. Aveton Gifford, annual value of the church £40. Lixton, annual value of the chantry 100s. Alexander Champernon , Richard Hankeford , John Gorges , Henry Foleford , William Bikebury , Ralph Chalone and John Gambon, junior , were lately seised in their demesne as of fee of 18 messuages, a water-mill, 400 a. land and 66s. annual rent at Midsummer, Michaelmas, Christmas and Easter in equal portions, from tenements in High Bickington, Umberleigh, Great Torrington, Bulworthy, Kitsham, Grendestow, Higher Kyngdon, Clyue in the parish of Frithelstock and Holbeton, except the lands and tenements in Scobbiscombe and a close called ‘Smytheswillespark’ in Holbeton. By their indented charter dated at Woodland, 8 December 1416, and shown to the jurors, they granted these less the exception and described as all messuages, lands, tenements, rents, services and reversions of all tenancies whatsoever in those vills, to John and Lena his wife for her lifetime. John died seised of this estate in the above form and Lena is still seised of it. This holding comprises the following parts. High Bickington and Umberleigh, a messuage, the mill, 40 a. land and 6s. rent, held of William Palton, chevalier , of his manor of Umberleigh by knight service, annual value of the messuage, mill and land, 60s. Great Torrington, 10 messuages and 20s. rent, held of Robert Chalons, chevalier , of his manor of Torrington in free burgage, annual value of the messuages 40s. Bulworthy, Kitsham, Umberleigh, Higher Kyngdon and Clyue, 3 messuages, 200 a. land and 20s. rent, held severally of John Herle, knight , William Monnrose , William Henstecote and the prior of Frithelstock , service unknown, annual value 40s. Holbeton, 4 messuages, 160 a. land and 20s. rent, held of Philip Courtenay , a minor in ‪the king’s wardship, of his manor of Cadeleigh by knight service, annual value of the messuages and land, 100s. He died seised in his demesne as of fee of a water-mill in Chagford, held of the earl of Huntingdon of his castle of Barnstaple by knight service, annual value 3s. 4d.

He died on 7 February last. Lena his wife is pregnant with their child and if God gives his grace for it to be born, it will be John’s next heir. Otherwise Joan wife of Thomas Ferleght and Joan wife of John Paulyn are his kinswomen and next heirs, Joan wife of Thomas Ferlegh as daughter of Joan daughter of Oliver father of Gilbert father of John father of John named in the writ, aged 50 years and more, and Joan wife of John Paulyn as daughter of Christine daughter of the same Oliver father of Gilbert father of John father of John named in the writ, aged 40 years and more.
