He died on 16 June last. Thomas de Courtenay , his son by his wife Anne who survives, is his next heir, aged 8 years on 3 May last.

By a deed sealed with his seal of arms and dated 4 June 1421, shown to the jurors in evidence, he gave [with specified lands in Devon and Cornwall] the manor of Crewkerne to his uncle Hugh Courtenay, knight , of Haccombe , his kinsman Hugh Lutrell, knight , his steward John Fortescu, esquire , Thomas Hendeman , Richard Aldryngton , clerk s, John Selman , William Dawny , Richard Bamfyle and Henry Fortescu for a term of 40 years from the Nativity of St. John the Baptist next to take the profits for the payment of his father's debts and after the deduction of reasonable expenses to distribute the residue for the souls of his father and mother, his own and those of all the faithful departed. By a deed of 30 June 1421 Hugh, as earl of Devon and lord of Okehampton , quitclaimed the manor to them, and on the day on which he went overseas he declared orally to the feoffees that he had conveyed the lands only to those uses. The manor of Crewkerne is held of the king in chief by knight service. There are in it the hundred, the advowson of the church of Crewkerne, three portions in the church, i.e. for a deacon, subdeacon and the chapel of Misterton annexed to the church, the chantry of St. Mary in the church and another chantry of St. Mary in the churchyard. Annual values: the manor £18 above £100 assize rents at Easter, the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, Michaelmas and Christmas in equal portions; the hundred 40s.; the advowson nil. By his letters patent, the date of which the jurors do not know because they were not shown to them, he granted a yearly rent of £4 6s. 8d. for life to Thomas Symson , who survives, to be paid from the manor of Crewkerne by the reeve at the terms mentioned above in equal portions.

By an indenture dated at Cornwood on 20 March 1412, shown to the jurors in evidence, the feoffees confirmed them to Hugh Courtenay named in the writ, son of Edward de Courtenay, earl of Devon , and his wife Anne, who survives, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies, remainder to Edward de Courtenay, earl of Devon . Hugh and Anne were seised in demesne as of fee tail of tenements in Hulham and £4 13s. 4d. rent in Washbourne and long before his death Hugh conveyed the tenements to William Dauney, esquire , for life and the rent to Peter Plente for life by separate deeds sealed with a seal of his arms and shown to the jurors in evidence, so Hugh was seised in fee only of the reversions. Hugh and Anne had issue Thomas, their elder son, and John, who both survive.
