Devon. Inquisition. Exeter. 12 March 1419. [Copleston]. 1420 in the Chancery version, but 1419 in the Exchequer copy, where it appears to have been altered from another year. The date of death is given in both versions as 'Saturday after Michaelmas last' - if he died in Oct. 1418 (as confirmed by the apportionment calculation, and by 343), then the inquisition must have been held in March 1419, not 1420.
Jurors: John Vautard of Clyst ; Nicholas Langacre ; John Stapelhill junior ; John Duke ; John Frankcheyny ; William Pyry ; John Martyn ; John Neweman ; John Axe ; William Selman ; William Werthe ; and John Eston .
He held no lands or tenements of the king in chief or by service in the county. He held the manor of Cullompton Sackville, annual value £10, in tail male by gift and feoffment of Richard Courtenay, bishop of Norwich , one moiety held of Edward Seyntjon of his manor of Lapford and the other of Alice Fraunceys of her manor of Hayes, service unknown.
He died on 1 Oct. 1418. Philip Courtenay , son and heir of John Courtenay, knight , brother and heir of Richard Courtenay , in the king's wardship, his kinsman and next heir, was aged 15 years and more on 18 Jan. last.
[Exchequer copy, foot:.] Apportionment of the manor's value from 1 Oct. 1418 to 23 Nov. 1419: £11 11s. 6d. for 1 year and 54 days.

Richard, bishop of Norwich , as Master Richard Courtenay , son and heir of Philip de Courtenay, knight , by his indenture granted for life to William Frye and his wife Joan the manor of Broadwindsor with the hamlet of Adesham, paying 40 marks yearly to Richard with remainder to William, son of John Frye , for life. Richard afterwards granted the 40 marks of rent to his brother William Courtenay in tail male, remainder to Richard's right heirs. Richard died.
William Courtenay died on 15 Oct. 1418. Heir as in 342. The 40 marks of rent belong to the king by reason of Philip's minority.
