Thomas de Grey, knight , held the manor of Stansfield and gave it to Roger his son, Margaret wife of Roger, and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the heirs of Thomas. Roger survived his father and died without heirs. Then John Lakyngethe, knight, and the said Margaret, then his wife, granted their rights in Stansfield to William Forde and Walter Brugge , clerks, and John Hethe for the life of Margaret. She died on 29 June 1399 . Between 6 and 13 Jan. 1400 Richard Basyngham , in the name of Fulk de Grey, kinsman and heir of Thomas de Grey , that is son of Fulk, brother of Roger, son of Thomas, entered the manor of Stansfield, claiming the right of inheritance of Fulk, and also claiming of the last earl of Warwick whatever rights he had in that manor, as guardian of Fulk son of Fulk, he being under age. Fulk was 17 on 28 Oct. 1399 , and Fulk the father died long before Margaret. The manor except for a quarter called ‘Narfordestenement’ is held of the earl of March , who is in the king’s ward, as a third part of a knight’s fee. The quarter is held of the countess of Warwick of her manor of Panworth as a quarter of a knight’s fee. This manor was in the king’s hands long before the death of Margaret owing to the forfeiture of Thomas earl of Warwick . Thomas de Grey, clerk , held a tenement in Denston of the earl of March by the service of a fiftieth part of a knight’s fee. He died long before the death of Margaret, and then the earl of March , father of the present earl, took this tenement with the ward of Fulk son of Fulk, as kinsman and heir of Thomas de Grey, clerk , that is son of Fulk, brother of Thomas. The wardship and marriage he granted to various persons. The annual value of Stansfield manor is altogether 16 marks, the three quarters held of the earl of March £8, and the quarter called ‘Narfordes’ 4 marks; and owing to the death of Margaret the king should hold this manor for the reasons and in the form abovesaid.
