He held the manor of Hempnall in Hempnall, and 40s. rent in Fritton, Morningthorpe and Long Stratton, annual value 10 marks, and 3s.4d. rent from the manor of John Lestraunge, knight , in Burnham Westgate called Reynham’s, all in his demesne as of fee of the king in chief by knight service. He proposed to make an enfeoffment to exclude the king by fraud and collusion from the wardship and marriage of his heir, as appears by his first will dated 24 Oct. 1389 , and also by his last will dated at Belaugh on 24 Sept. 1391 [ sic ], which is of record in the court of the archbishop of Canterbury in London.
He died on 15 Sept. 1391 . William his son and heir was then aged 4 years and more. He was an idiot all his life and died on 18 Dec. 1402 . Ralph Hemenale is next heir and aged 30 years and more.
John Muryell and Hugh Lancastre , clerks, Simon Blyaunt , and John de Berton, rector of Downham Market , have held the lands since his death and taken the profits, title unknown. John West and Nicholas Baron purchased a manor in Hillington called Bury’s without the king’s licence. It is held of the king in chief, annual value, with the advowson of Stibbard belonging to it, £10. [ Cf. CCR 1402–5 , p.114].
