He held no lands or tenements of the king in chief, but Robert Vaggescomb and John Vppecote granted 1/2 manor of Cockington to John Cary and Thomas Cary, clerk , and the heirs of the body of John, with remainder to the right heirs of John Cary . John and Thomas were thus seised. Similarly, John Foucray and Alexander Werthe granted the other moiety of the manor, except a mill, toft, 4 a. land, and 2 a. meadow, to John Cary, Thomas Cary , and Robert Vaggescomb, clerk , and to the heirs of the body of John, with remainder, except the pre-exceptions, to the right heirs of John. John, Thomas, and Robert were thus seised of the moiety. The manor, exceptions excepted, was afterwards seized into the hand of ‪ Richard II , owing to John’s forfeiture, and the king afterwards granted it, among other things, by letters patent to John Holand, late earl of Huntingdon , father of John, present earl of Huntingdon , and to the heirs of his body [CPR 1385–89, pp. 494–5]. The late earl then died, and the manor was seized into the hand of ‪ Henry IV , and the king afterwards granted it, among other things, by letters patent to Robert Chalons, knight , and his heirs [CPR 1399–1401, p. 153]. John Cary , Robert Vaggescomb , and Thomas Cary afterwards died, and Robert Cary , son and heir of John Cary brought the writ de forma donationis in descendere into the court of ‪ Henry IV against Robert Chalons, knight , regarding a moiety of the manor that Robert Vaggescomb and John Vppecote had given to John Cary and Thomas, and to the heirs of the body of John. Proceedings continued until Robert Cary had recovered his seisin of the moiety by judgement in the court. Robert Cary also brought the writ de forma donationis in descendere in the same court against the same Robert Chalons, knight , regarding the other moiety of the manor, exceptions excepted, that John Foucray and Alexander Werthe had given to John Cary , Thomas Cary, clerk , and Robert Vaggescomb, clerk , and to the heirs of the body of John. Similarly, proceedings continued until Robert Cary had recovered his seisin, as shown in ‪ Henry V’s exemplification by letters patent. n068 Robert Cary continued his possession of the manor, exceptions excepted, for all his life, and he died so seised. Joan his wife was still living. Philip Cary entered the manor, exceptions excepted, as son and heir of Robert Cary and assigned a third of it in dower, as following, with all rents, services and reversions, to Joan who yet survives, with reversion to Philip and his heirs: a cottage and 3 a. land in Chelston, and a small plot (clawam) of land in ‘Henpen’, parcel of the manor’s barton, that John Tokke, senior , holds; a cottage, close, and acre of land in Chelston, and 2 1/2 a. land of the barton in ‘Henpen’, that John Tokke , ‘webber’, holds; a cottage, close, and 2 a. land in Chelston, and 5 a. land of the barton in ‘Henpen’, that Thomas Hurt holds; a cottage and 3 a. land in Chelston, and 6 a. land of the barton in ‘Henpen’, that John Sander holds; a messuage, ferling and 2 a. land in Chelston, a way at ‘Greneway’, a close called ‘Chylstonorchard’, and an acre of land of the barton in ‘Henpen’, that William Baron holds; a messuage, ferling, and close of land in Chelston, that John Tokke, junior , holds; a cote, 2 closes, and 1 1/2 a. land in Chelston, and 5 a. land of the barton in ‘Henpen’, that John Mey holds; a messuage, 2 cotes, a ferling, and 5 1/2 a. land in Chelston, that John Parson atte Wylle holds; a messuage, ferling, and 2 a. land in Chelston, and 2 a. land of the barton in ‘Henpen’, that Richard Jane holds; a messuage, ferling, and 2 a. land in Chelston, 5 a. land of the barton in ‘Henpen’, and a parcel of land called ‘Blyndewylmore’, that Philip Meteyene holds; a messuage, cote, and ferling of land in Chelston, and 2 1/2 a. land of the barton in ‘Henpen’, that John Parson ‘yn the lane’ holds; a cote in Chelston and 5 a. land of the barton in ‘Henpen’, that Clarice Baron holds; a messuage, ferling, and virgate of land in Chelston, and 2 closes of land of the barton in ‘Whetecomb’, that John Pyers holds; a messuage and 2 ferlings of land in Chelston, that Richard Pyers holds; a messuage and ferling of land in Chelston, and 6 a. land of the barton in ‘Whetecomb’ that Isabel Parson holds; a cote and acre of land in Chelston, and 3 a. land of the barton at ‘Greneway’, that Maud Gybbe holds; a cote and 1 1/2 a. land in Chelston, and 2 1/2 a. and a virgate of land of the barton in ‘Henpen’, that Mathias (Math) Myssays holds; a cote and an acre and virgate of land in Chelston, that John Broun holds; a cote that Hugh Smyth holds there; a cote in Chelston and 21/2 a. land of the barton in ‘Henpen’, that William Batyn holds; a mill in Chelston with 2 a. land, that Henry Brond holds; and a parcel of land called ‘Scherewylmore’, a meadow called ‘Saltmede’, a meadow beside the dovecot of the abbey of Torre, a meadow lying below ‘Shylston Orchard’, a meadow called ‘Leuermede’, and a cote and 3 a. land, that Stephen Parson holds in Cockington. Philip afterwards, long before his death, granted the two parts of the manor, exceptions excepted, to Philip Courtenay, knight , and John Gambon , and to their heirs, with the intention that Philip and John make satisfaction for all Philip Cary ’s debts from the issues. With satisfaction made, they were to grant the two parts to Christine, who was wife of Philip Cary , for life, with successive remainders to William, son of Philip, and the heirs of his body; and to John, earl of Huntingdon , and his heirs.
